Music in Museums: Alex South, Whale Song

Immerse yourself in music at the Wardlaw Museum. Drop in to hear music by St Andrews’ most talented performers. Alex South performs music for clarinet, bass clarinet and electronics, inspired by the sounds and rhythms of the sea and its cetacean inhabitants. The programme includes Jan Foote’s ‘Submergence’, in addition to Alex’s own pieces composed as part of his interdisciplinary doctoral research into humpback whale song, carried out with biologists Luke Rendell and Ellen Garland (University of St Andrews), and composer Emily Doolittle (Royal Conservatoire of Scotland). Expect full sonic immersion in music that draws on field recordings, folk song, and the otherworldly yet familiar voice of the humpback whale.
